Matthew 7:9

A couple of years ago, I decided it was time to trade my car in and get an upgrade.  Jerry and I finally had reached a point that we were financially okay.  But for some reason, every time we wanted to go look, get a trade-in value for my car, or even discuss a budget, something came up that blocked moving forward.  We didn’t even get to the point of praying together and agreeing together.  Luckily, God must have been blocking us.

Matthew 7:9 “You parents – if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?” (NLT)

I really wanted and felt like I deserved a better car.  But, we decided it was time to buy a different house.  Living in a duplex with in-laws isn’t always the best solution, but we had made it work for 6 years and it was time to move.  That move saved our relationship with the in-laws.  If we had gotten the car, we wouldn’t have been able to get our new-to-us home.  We asked for stones, but God gave us bread.

God knew what He was doing and I thank Him every day for it.

There are so many examples of something we want, but don’t get because something better comes along.  I’d like to hear some of your examples in the comments.  How has God given you bread instead of the stones you asked for?

  1. I wanted to go into all the world to teach (my stone). God’s bread was for me to sit on the side lines for almost four years to work out some things that were causing me to stumble. At the time I thought He was feeding me stones. However, now I would not trade those four years for anything.
